Does international solidarity end at the borders of Ukraine? (EN)

Termin Details

On 24.02.2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Since then, millions have become poorer, and millions have been displaced, with 70,000 settling in Berlin.

The lives of Ukrainian leftists have also changed radically. Whether they fled the war, went to the army or are simply living under constant threat, Ukrainian leftists continue their work. They are struggling for dignified conditions for hospital staff
in Lviv, for student housing in Kyiv, for decent pay for steel workers in Kryvyi Rih, fighting against fascists in Odesa, orga- nising aid for internally displaced women; the list goes on.

However, both German and Ukrainian state media largely igno- re these social struggles, portraying Ukraine as a monolith at war. The German Left mostly conforms to this ignorance and therefore offers little solidarity with these struggles, thus mis- sing out on providing needed support for workers in Ukraine.

The ongoing transformation of Ukraine into a neoliberal la- boratory at the periphery of western capitalism means that working people are under pressure from cutbacks, blackouts, and corruption – while fighting against Russia for survival.

In this workshop we will learn about social struggles in Ukraine. We will hear from activists from key left organisations such
as Social Movement, Solidarity Collectives, and Direct Action. Come to share your experiences and thoughts with us!
