Germany isn’t well known as a colonial empire. But in just a few decades at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, the Kaiser’s troops massacred hundreds of thousands of people across Africa and Asia. Right now, statues of slave traders, racists, and colonialists are being toppled all over the world. Berlin is full of reminders of the city’s colonial past. At the moment, a few of the city’s worst street names are being changed.In our (Anti)Colonialism tour, we look for signs of oppression and resistance, including:
– the beginning of the Brandenburg slave trade
– the division of Africa at the Berlin Conference
– anticolonial resistance in Weimar and East Germany
– the racist history of Berlin’s “African Quarter”
– today’s struggles to change colonial street names

Group size is limited to 30 people.
Our tour will be meeting in front of the Akademie der Künste at Pariser Platz. That is opposite the Brandenburg Gate and next to the Hotel Adlon (S-Bhf Brandenburger Tor). We will meet at 16:00 and leave by 16:10.
Our tour will be ending two hours later at U-Bhf Rehberge in Wedding. We will use public transport, so don’t forget about getting your HU Campus Card beforehand.
